About Newtownards, Northern Ireland


Newtownards is a large town and civil parish in County Down, and is situated at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, on the Ards Peninsula.

The area boasts an impressive array of coffee shops and eateries, including Knotts, Openhouse Coffee Co and well-known chain, Caffe Nero.

Newtownards is overlooked by the 100-foot-high Scrabo Tower, the most well-known landmark of the town. Scrabo Tower stands tall in Scrabo Country Park, which has breathtaking woodland walks and parkland, through Killynether Woods.

The Somme Heritage Centre is located in Ards, and is the Somme Associations Flagship project. The Heritage Centre is a unique visitor attraction of international significance, portraying the reality of the First World War.

The Ark Open Farm attracts visitors from across County Down, and from its petting zoo, pony rides and restaurant make for the perfect family day out. The Ark Open Farm specializes in rare and endangered species, that would not be typically found in Ireland.

Sport within Ards has always been prominent, with the town competing competitively across Northern Ireland/Ireland's top football, rugby and cricket leagues. Ards RFC play in the All Ireland Division Two B (rugby), Ards CC play in Section 3 of the NCU Senior League (cricket) and Ards FC play in the IFA Championship (football).
